There are some people who do not believe that Scripture speaks of this physical world being completely destroyed by fire and brimstone because it has already happened. Jesus’ second coming did indeed already happen from late-66 to early-70 AD (details here and here), but the Creator God will return and end all things physical/tangible once this entire earth is under total control by evil. This study will prove that God has an established pattern of doing exactly that.
In the English, Genesis 1:2 says the earth (“the firm”) was “without form and void.” The phrase “without form” is tôhûw, to’-hoo; from an unused root meaning to lie waste; a desolation (of surface).

Strong’s Concordance Greek Dictionary:
H8414
תֹּהוּ
tôhû
to’-hoo
From an unused root meaning to lie waste; a desolation (of surface), that is, desert; figuratively a worthless thing; adverbially in vain: – confusion, empty place, without form, nothing, (thing of) nought, vain, vanity, waste, wilderness.
So before God began our current creation, the earth was already here in a wasted, desolated condition…. not only void or empty, but previously destroyed.
This means “the beginning” in Genesis 1:1 could have been multiple earth-creations ago. “The beginning” did not begin on day 1 of the creation that we are familiar with now, which means “the end” of us/our earth is not a permanent end of God’s creation (see God Works in Ages).
We know when Jesus returns, all earthly elements melt with fervent heat, including the firmament (2 Peter 3:10, 12) — this will cause it to again go back to being a destroyed “firm,” waters and darkness. It appears from Genesis 1:2 that this has happened before.
God Created Darkness
Satan was cast down to the earth after his rebellion which was BEFORE our current creation (source: this 3-minute video) — he was only restrained at the cross, not cast out of heaven at the cross.
Genesis 1:2 tells us that BEFORE creation, there was darkness, a wasted, destroyed “firm” (earth), and waters that were already here.
We know the Spirit (Jesus Christ) moved over the waters BEFORE creation. ALL was created unto Jesus Christ:
because in him were the all things created, those in the heavens, and those upon the earth, those visible, and those invisible, whether thrones, whether lordships, whether principalities, whether authorities; all things through him, and for him, have been created,
Colossians 1:16 (YLT, Young’s Literal Translation)
BEFORE our current creation, God created the darkness (Isaiah 45:7).
On day 1, God said “let there be light” — this was FORMED by God and not created (Isaiah 45:7). This formed light wasn’t the sun’s light which was created on day 4. The formed light is the Holy Spirit of God.
God separated the formed light from the created darkness. This tells us that the darkness is also spiritual like the light… the darkness is the spirit of Satan (evil) and his fallen ones. God created evil for His power and glory, and for the refinement of His creation (see God Created Evil).
So when God says Satan is the prince of the power of the air (Ephesians 2:2), He meant it literally…. our literal airwaves. We are literally living on Satan’s refurbished dwelling, his place of darkness and no knowledge of Truth, and He hates it that man was given dominion over the creation that God has placed here.
At the cross, Satan was bound so he is severely limited in how he can affect the called-out chosen of God (details here). And he cannot affect nature at all — that power belongs to God and Jesus only (study here). But he reigns within the wicked men of this earth, which is the majority of mankind (details here).
F.Y.I.
Did you know there are only two things in Scripture that are truly eternal? They are the Holy Elohim Godhead and the created darkness.
Strong’s word G126 is the only word that means “eternal; everlasting” in God’s inspired word which was written in the Greek. It is only in 2 verses in the New Testament: Romans 1:20 and Jude 1:6.
All other words in the New Testament that are translated to English as eternal, everlasting, ever, forever are the words G165 (noun) and G166 (adjective) which means “an age” that has a beginning and an end.
It’s an interesting study which can be found here: “Hell” is not Eternal – God Works in Ages.
For Further Study
The Old Covenant was the old heaven (Jewish Sanhedrin government) and the old earth (citizens under the law). With the New Covenant came the new heaven (reign of Jesus Christ under grace) and the new earth (citizens are now in the spiritual kingdom of God – their bodies are the 3rd temple). See New Heaven & New Earth are Not What We’ve Been Taught.
It never ceases to amaze me what God’s inspired word says in the original Hebrew and Greek. For details on how to do this yourself, see this page.
Praying that God will lead us all into His Truth, and increase our understanding of Him and His Word…. line upon line, truth upon truth, according to His purpose. God bless!
