In the third year of the reign of Belshazzar of Babylon, Daniel had his second vision of the Medo-Persian ram and the Greecian goat (Daniel chapter 8).
In chapter 9, we see Daniel studying the words of the Lord which were in the writings of Jeremiah. Regarding his second vision, Daniel concluded based on Jeremiah’s writings that there would be 70 years in the desolations of Jerusalem.
In Daniel 9:20-27, we see God’s messenger, Gabriel, coming to Daniel to explain the 70 years/weeks to him. This article will cover the words of Gabriel which are given in verses 9:24-27.
The Greeks did not use “weeks” to refer to an actual time period of seven days. And the old testament Hebrew says a week can be a period of seven days or seven years (see this article).
The word weeks here in Daniel is Strong’s H7657 which is a passive participle word of H7650 meaning “to be complete” as a denominative of H7651 which means “seven or seven times” — it literally means “sevened” which is a work of purpose being completed.
So when we see the phrase “seventy weeks,” it is saying that a period of 70 will be sevened. Whenever we see the number seven (or 70) in the bible, it is representing completion and perfection of God’s purpose. So in other words, a period of 70 will be completed and perfected by being sevened.
The 70 Period of Time
In Daniel 9:24, Gabriel says the sevened 70 will be against the Israel people who broke the old covenant with God and against their physical city Jerusalem. This “seven-ing” is the process of moving out of the old covenant and into the new covenant with God. Gabriel explained that this sevened period is for the accomplishment of six things:
- To finish the rebellion
- To end sins
- To cover, atone, cleanse sin/faults
- To abide always in morality/righteousness
- To fulfill/close up the vision/dream and prophecy
- To anoint the consecrated holy place (which is our hearts/physical vessels)
Jesus’ second coming is not necessary to fulfill God’s sevened seventy for His people — Jesus’ work was already completed at the cross and with His first coming (the second coming is to deal with the wicked – the bride will be ready by then). Those associating Daniel’s 70th week to the final 42 months/the great tribulation are not following scripture.
For Your Study
Verses 9:24-27 are posted below with the Strong’s number behind each phrase/word. I have found the online Blue Letter Bible most helpful for this study of the Hebrew.
SeventyH7657 weeksH7620 are determinedH2852 uponH5921 thy peopleH5971 and uponH5921 thy holyH6944 city,H5892 to finishH3607 the transgression,H6588 and to make an endH2856 of sins,H2403 and to make reconciliationH3722 for iniquity,H5771 and to bring inH935 everlastingH5769 righteousness,H6664 and to seal upH2856 the visionH2377 and prophecy,H5030 and to anointH4886 the most Holy.H6944 H6944
This verse is explained/interpreted in the above section titled “The 70 Period of Time.”
KnowH3045 therefore and understand,H7919 that fromH4480 the going forthH4161 of the commandmentH1697 to restoreH7725 and to buildH1129 JerusalemH3389 untoH5704 the MessiahH4899 the PrinceH5057 shall be sevenH7651 weeks,H7620 and threescoreH8346 and twoH8147 weeks:H7620 the streetH7339 shall be builtH1129 again,H7725 and the wall,H2742 even in troublousH6695 times.H6256
The “going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem UNTO JESUS CHRIST” is a period of SEVEN WEEKS — this is the church age.
The phrase “and threescore and two weeks” is speaking of the old covenant/old testament era which was a foreshadowing of God’s new covenant with His people. The next verse (9:26) tells us that this 62 week period ends at the cross.
[For more on how the entire old testament sings the gospel message of Jesus Christ, read this book from Amazon: “The 7 Feasts of a Highly Effective God” by Keith Elrod – it is an easy, edifying read.]
The word “Jerusalem” here means “dual” mountains, which are the sister tribes of Israel and Judah who represent the modern-day church which is spiritual Israel.
When this Jerusalem is rebuilt, it becomes “New Jerusalem.” We are told in Revelation 21:2-3 that the holy city new Jerusalem is prepared as a bride for Jesus. This is the tabernacle of God that was with men (the church/spiritual Israel) and now He will dwell with and communicate with them directly rather than in their physical vessels by way of the Comforter/Holy Spirit.
The Rebuilt Jerusalem is not Physical
The body of Christ — the people of His church — is the third Jerusalem temple under covenant with God (1 Corinthians 3:16-17 & 6:19-20, 2 Corinthians 6:16, Romans 8:9). Jesus’ bride/the church is the city that is New Jerusalem (Revelation 21:2-3).
Daniel 9:25 continued:
The word “street” here is “a width” from the root word “to broaden” and implies “a passage.” It is the path known as “the narrow way” on which God’s increasing flock will walk through by His calling us to Jesus Christ (Matthew 7:14).
The word “wall” here means “incised/to cut through” and is from the root word meaning “to wound sharply.” “Wall” is H2742 which is an adjective describing the narrow way street/passage. You can see here in the Blue Letter Bible that they try to pass off “wall” in Daniel 9:25 as being a noun which it clearly is not. On that page, if you scroll down to the section titled “Brown-Driver-Briggs Lexicon,” it refers you to point IV for Daniel 9:25, but they only have points I, II, III, and V. No point 4!
We see the wall is spiritual in Revelation 21:14 — it has 12 foundations and in them are the names of the 12 apostles of the Lamb. These apostles were the 12 who walked with Jesus during His ministry on earth. After the cross, they were given power to performs signs, wonders and healings just as Jesus did. When they 12 apostles died, the apostolic church of signs and wonders ended with them (any future signs and wonders will be a deception from the antichrist beast kingdom up until Jesus returns in the clouds at His second coming).
The reconstruction of Jerusalem into new Jerusalem will be incised/cut through by our wounds because we continue on the narrow way even during times of distress and trouble. We must through much tribulation enter the kingdom of God (Acts 14:22).
It is interesting to read this verse in multiple bible translations (you can do so on Bible Gateway here). Some translators even throw a moat of water in there… anything to deceive people into believing that this temple reconstruction is a building of bricks rather than the hearts of the redeemed/new Jerusalem.
God says clearly in His inspired word that He does not dwell in temples made with hands (Acts 7:48). Any future physical temples made with hands will be pagan and be an abomination to God — the offering of blood sacrifices is blaspheming the blood of Jesus Christ.
And afterH310 threescoreH8346 and twoH8147 weeksH7620 shall MessiahH4899 be cut off,H3772 but notH369 for himself: and the peopleH5971 of the princeH5057 that shall comeH935 shall destroyH7843 the cityH5892 and the sanctuary;H6944 and the endH7093 thereof shall be with a flood,H7858 and untoH5704 the endH7093 of the warH4421 desolationsH8074 are determined.H2782
Here, we see that Jesus Christ will be crucified after the threescore and two weeks, so we know this first 62 weeks is the old testament/old covenant era.
The period of the troublous building of physical Jerusalem under Zerubbabel, Ezra, and Nehemiah takes us to the end of the old testament — this is part of the 62 weeks because it occurred before Messiah was cut off.
Because of the teachings of misguided men, my belief had always been that the prince that will come in this verse is the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, that is, Antichrist/Gog (Ezekiel 38:3 & 39:1), when his people/the wicked came and destroyed the physical temple of Jerusalem and the entire city of Jerusalem in 70 A.D.
However, my former belief changed after deep prayerful study. I do believe Matthew Henry was correct in his commentary in stating that the prince here is Jesus Christ… His blood ruined the temple and physical Jerusalem.
If you read this verse in the “Hebrew OT+” bible in eSword, you can see that the people of the prince are overcoming the broken old covenant through the gospel message.
So here we see Jesus’ desolations on the sinful temple being a foreshadow of the future Antichrist’s desolations on God’s righteous temple/us (which will bring about a permanent end to the antichrist kingdom).
History does show the ancient Roman Empire destroyed the Jerusalem temple in 70 A.D. — their land included regions in what is now known as modern-day Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran (the little horn “chief prince” is a Middle-Easterner that rises out of ancient Rome, formerly Greecia – Daniel 7:8 & 8:9). But God moved them to complete this physical act for His purposes, just like He will move them in the end of days (Revelation 17:17). But it was the blood of Jesus and the spreading of the gospel that put an end to the ways of the old covenant.
[For more information about the future Antichrist that was birthed out of ancient Rome/formerly Greecia, see my article here.]
“The end with a flood” could be interpreted as “After the end will come a deluge/flood/an overwhelm;” and “unto the end of the battle, devastations are decreed.” The ending of physical Jerusalem and its brick temple will result in a decree that devastations will overwhelm the sinful people to the very end of the spiritual battle — these people will be those who broke the old covenant with God and those who break the new covenant with God. We are told that God has blinded these people to the Truth (Zephaniah 1:17) but He will open the eyes of those whom He will (Isaiah 42:16-18).

And he shall confirmH1396 the covenantH1285 with manyH7227 for oneH259 week:H7620 and in the midstH2677 of the weekH7620 he shall cause the sacrificeH2077 and the oblationH4503 to cease,H7673 and forH5921 the overspreadingH3671 of abominationsH8251 he shall make it desolate,H8074 even untilH5704 the consummation,H3617 and that determinedH2782 shall be pouredH5413 uponH5921 the desolate.H8076
The beginning of this verse actually reads “The confirmation of the covenant will be made with many one week.” This is referring to God’s work through His Son. The future prince to come in verse 26 is NOT the Antichrist. Nothing about the Antichrist and his future kingdom in the last days is mentioned in the seventy weeks of Daniel. GOD is making a spiritual covenant with many for one week here in verse 27, despite what the deceptive political actors on the world stage are doing (deceiving others into believing that they are the people who fulfill prophecy). The covenant is God’s with His people. ONLY GOD FULFILLS PROPHECY. His will is done in this earth as in heaven (Matthew 6:10), and He isn’t using the Hebrew or Gregorian calendars.
For clarification: Hosea 12:1 tells us “Ephraim feedeth on wind, and followeth after the east wind: he daily increaseth lies and desolation; and they do make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt.” This “oil agreement/covenant” was shortly before the Assyrians took Israel in 722 B.C. which was over 100 years before Daniel wrote of the Seventy Weeks future prophecy. But Hosea 12:1 is certainly a foreshadow of Revelation 17:17 when Mystery Babylon enters into covenant with the Middle-Eastern antichrist and he sets up the abomination that desolates.
The word “week” – H7620
The word “week” here means 2 halves — the phrase “in the midst” denotes 2 parts to this week. This one week is the ending of the old covenant and the establishing and confirmation of the new covenant. The confirmation of the covenant abounds for a sevened period of one seven (7 always represents completion of God’s purpose in the bible).
The first half, or first part, of this week is in educating the people about salvation under the new covenant. This half of the week includes the ministries of John the Baptist and of Jesus Christ while he walked on the earth, both before and after Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection (Jesus walked the earth for 40 days after His resurrection and then ascended into heaven).
The last half, or last part, of this week is the complete destruction of old covenant rituals which have become an abomination to God since the shed blood of His Son. This included the ending of literal animal sacrifices and the ending of literal temple oblations.
The word “oblation” – H4503
A physical oblation is a daily food provision that nourishes (Daniel 1:5) — in this case, the giving of a sacrificed animal/lamb; but the daily spiritual provision is the protection and comfort given by God. The physical oblation came to its final end in 70 A.D. with the total destruction of the brick temple and the city of Jerusalem. The spiritual oblation ended when the people broke covenant with God and cannot be restored without entering into the new covenant with Him.
The taking away of old covenant physical and spiritual oblations is a foreshadow of the new covenant daily oblations being removed. Jesus tells us His body is the bread — he was removed at the cross — this is the physical new covenant daily oblation that was taken away. The spiritual removal of the new covenant daily provision is the Truth being twisted in our printed publications and turned to false doctrines in our church houses. We are told that Truth is the Word of God which is Jesus Christ (Revelation 19:13). For more on the taking away of the daily, see my article “Abomination of Desolation.”
So we see the 70 weeks of Daniel are as follows:
First 62 weeks: The old covenant/old testament era.
Seven weeks: The new covenant/new testament gospel era.
One week: The confirming of the covenant. First half is John the Baptist’s and Jesus’ ministries on earth — their teachings about the new covenant to come. Second half is the destruction of all physical things of the old covenant which was caused by the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
So we are in the last seven weeks of the 70 weeks which will end with the abomination of desolation which will mark the last 42 months of this earth’s existence (for more on this timeline of events, see my article “Abomination of Desolation”).
Why does the 70 weeks end at the last 42 months? Because Gabriel told Daniel in verse 9:24 that this 70 week period is for “anointing the consecrated holy place” which is the Holy Spirit baptism of the physical vessels of God’s chosen people — this is the church age/gospel era. We know the church age ends when the power of God’s people has been scattered (Daniel 12:7) — this is when the abomination that desolates is set up and God allows Antichrist to prevail over Christians (Revelation 9:20-21 & 11:9-10).
Gabriel also said that the 70 weeks will “end the rebellion and sins” of Israel — this will also have been completed at the time the abomination of desolation is setup. At that time, there will be only the wheat and the tares — all who will come to Jesus Christ will have done so. God’s chosen will all have been given new hearts and will no longer rebel against Him… His sevened seventy for His people will have been fulfilled through Jesus’ blood and all will have been anointed and their sins atoned for by the time of the final 42 months.
Jesus’ second coming is not necessary to fulfill God’s sevened seventy for His people — Jesus’ work was already completed at the cross and with His first coming (the second coming is to deal with the wicked – the bride will be ready). Those associating Daniel’s 70th week to the final 42 months/the great tribulation are not following scripture.
For more information about the church/Two Witnesses and the desolation they experience in the very last days, see my article “The Two Witnesses.”
God’s true inspired Word is perfect but the English translators were not. God instructed us to “study to show ourselves approved” for a reason (2 Timothy 2:15). Those in study of the Word realize that the famine of Truth is upon us which is the great Falling Away spoken of in 2 Thessalonians 2:3 (see my article “Seven False Teachers in the Church”).
May God richly bless you and your studies of His inspired Word.
